Kim Barker

Owner of K Squared Nail Paint

Hellotittie: What made you choose Health and Beauty as an industry?
Kim Barker: I suffer from the winter blues, so my now partner Karen who went to beauty school would come over to my home to fix my hair and nails to help lift my spirits and we noticed every time she finished doing my
nails my mood changed drastically and from that my 'Aha moment' happened and K Squared Nail Paint was born.  Our love for nail polish and the desire to bridge the gap between creating a quality polish at an
affordable price point is actually how the health and beauty industry chose me.

HT: How did you come up with the name K2Nail Paint?
KB: K Squared Nail Paint is named after the Co-Founders Kimberly and Karen, therefore when you combine the 2 letter K’s from the first initials of our names, it becomes K to the second power like a math equation. Our nail polishes are handmade in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, so it was important to recognize the imprint of the brand’s foundation where it’s created with love.

HT: How do you want women to feel when wearing your nail polish?

KB: While people make think its just nail polish, it’s more than that. I want all K Squared Nail Painters to feel whimsical with a therapeutic allure. I want them to look at their nails with pride and excitement knowing they chose a quality product with minimal chemicals and didn’t have to break the bank to look good.

HT: What color is your best seller?

KB: All my nail colors are best sellers, it’s just depending on our Nail Painters mood, but its close between our Golden Rosè and glitter filled Birthday Surprise nail paints.

HT: What has been your greatest moment of success?
KB: Funny enough, it’s when the brand launched in 2015 at Atlantic Antic Street Fair in Brooklyn, NY where we sold over 350 bottles including testers and closed up shop before the fair was over. For me that defined my success from the public having confidence in a product that they weren’t familiar with, but willing to take a chance of me and push my brand into the universe.

HT: What woman inspires you and why?
KB:
This might be a bit cliché, but it’s my Mother. She inspires me because she came to America from Guyana with big dreams, but as life happens she wasn’t able to pursue all her desires.  So for me, her shortcomings are my fuel not to let my dreams just be a dream and die in my heart. Oh and I STAN for Lisa Price from Carol’s Daughter. They way she transformed her company from her Brooklyn kitchen to a national brand is inspiration for my success.

HT: What advice do you have for women aiming for a leadership position?
KB: I don’t like to give advice, I like to give my opinion, so for me I want women aiming for a leadership role to remember what it’s like to not be a leader and let that be your guide to how you want to be an effective leader.

HT: Any new and exciting things for K2Nail Paint?
KB: Definitely! Creating some new colors. Expanding our mobile nail concierge services as well as some Nail Painter merchandise.
