Why It’s Ok To Not Have A Job Right After Graduation
As I began approaching the last few weeks of my final year in college in May, I started to panic. Why hadn’t I managed to get a job yet? I saw friends and peers landing these dream jobs while I was embarrassed that I had nothing to show for my four years of hard work… which cost a lot of money not to mention.
The worst part was that I started doubting myself and losing my confidence. I can be disheartening, but it took me awhile to realize something that I wanted to share with you all. Those last few months of college and the summer when you get home don’t determine the future of your career. Just because you don’t have a job right now, doesn’t mean you won’t get one.
There is nothing wrong with not having a job lined up right after you graduate. College is something we will all miss, but it wasn’t easy. Between classes, tests, a job, a social life, clubs and sports for some, there is nothing wrong with taking the summer to relax and recharge. After all, once you start working, you don’t stop.
Everyone moves at their own pace in life. You really can’t compare yourself to other people who get jobs before you. There are some people who graduated at 22 and didn’t get a job until they were almost 30. There are people who graduated late and found work immediately. There are people who don’t even go to college and find what they love to do. There are people who get jobs right out of college, but hate what they do. There are people who take some time off and found their purpose in life. People are also changing their minds all the time, so do not feel like a failure. And remember, doing what you love is the most important thing in life.
For those of you who just graduated, not having a job right now might seem like the end of the world, but it’s really not. Enjoy the time off before we start the “real world” because there are a lot of upsides to doing that. Something will work out, I promise.
I hope this helped!
