What Women Can Be Thankful For This Season
Happy Thanksgiving, ladies! 2017 has been one hell of a year but we’re nearing the end. Through a lot of triggering events and sensationalized news updates, here are some things we, as women, can be thankful for this season.
Danica Roem wins Virginia
Democrat, Roem is the first openly transgender woman to be elected for state legislature in America! That is exciting. Especially in Virginia which is a historically conservative state. This gives me hope that things are changing for the best. We are one step closer to having a government that represents the diverse country that we are.
Women speak out against sexual assault, and men are held responsible
With the help of the brave women who stepped forward and the viral influence of the #MeToo Movement, more women and men than ever are speaking out against sexual assault in the workplace and Hollywood. And it’s making a difference. Louis C.K.’s movie is canceled. Netflix has canceled “House of Cards.” Weinstein is removed. I am so thankful for this drastic change for the better in this industry.
Shows reflect the importance of mental health
With the Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why” and the Tony award winning Broadway musical, “Dear Evan Hansen” the entertainment industry is encouraging work that reflects the importance of mental health. The success of both projects show that America isn’t afraid of this content and wants to learn more. Both display the struggles with depression and mental health along with the message to be better people ourselves.
The women who inspire us
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the women we look up to in our day-to-day lives and those who inspire us personally. That could be anyone. Your mom, your local girl gang, your squad, Danica Roem, Michelle Obama, Meryl Streep. Any woman who empowers you.
With everything going on in 2017, let’s take the time to be thankful for what we have and the women who make us strong. Happy Thanksgiving.
