Vika Shapel A Beauty Blogger Creates "The Chocolate Challenge" That Offended A lot Of Viewers

YouTube beauty blogger Vika Shapel had people in an uproar when she created the chocolate challenge. It all started when she posted a picture and video on Instagram displaying half of her face painted in brown to promote her new YouTube video challenge that she named "the chocolate challenge."

"Something fun is coming to YouTube, idk if there is a challenge like this but we haven't seen it so Im calling it the chocolate challenge!"

Not only was Shapel called out for coloring her skin brown, but people also noticed she changed her blue eyes brown and tightly curled her hair on the brown side of her face. People felt like Shapel's was attempting to mimic traditional traits and characteristics associated with the black community.

The backlash Shapel received was so intense that she deleted the post, and deactivated her Instagram account. Shapel apologized in a statement to Yahoo Beauty.

"I simply wanted to see how I looked in a deeper skin tone," she said. "I wasn’t aware of the whole blackface concept before people began commenting it on the photo. I would like to apologize to people that were hurt or offended by my post and it won’t happen again.”

The chocolate challenge was a failed attempt to mimic black people’s physical characteristics under the guise of a fun social media challenge.
