Stained Glass Artwork Presentation Celebrates Women Embracing Their Sexuality
If you've ever taken a moment to observe the stained glass artwork that riddles many churches, you would know that most of these displays make a point to show women in a more religious, and innocent based light. Most of these displays show women depicted as holy figures, with no hint of so called 'sexual signifiers'. Well that's all about to change. An artist by the name of Maggie West has opened up a new art installation entitled "98". This new display takes the idea of the women portrayed in stained glass artwork to a different level, with them being stripped away of their clothing and embracing both their sexual confidence and freedom, instead of trying to hide it.
The display will be unveiled at the third annual Amber Rose Slut Walk on October 1st in Los Angeles. The project was also funded by the Amber Rose Foundation. On why Maggie chose to present this type of artwork, she said:
"Throughout history, most women depicted in stained glass artwork are saints. The majority of these saints were virgins, many of them suffered gruesome violent deaths rather than lose their 'purity'. Rather than be celebrated for their purity, this piece... Pays tribute to women's freedom to sexually express themselves and protest sexual violence"-via The Huffington Post.
The display is named "98" because of the statistic by the Department of Justice that every 98 seconds, someone in the United States becomes a victim of sexual assault. The collection features a montage of women of all different colors, nationalities and everything far and in between, embracing their sexual confidence. Model Isis King, a prominent advocate for the trans community is one of the many figures featured in the display.
"I stand as a trans woman of color, proud of my body, and feel like it shouldn't be police without my consent. The attention is misdirected and a victim should never be shamed because of their self expression through clothes."- via The Huffington Post.
The display is a beautiful piece that seeks to acknowledge, and strengthen women's beauty on the inside and out. And this display acknowledges nothing short of diversity of Mind Body and Soul among others. To hear more about Maggie's display" don't forget to follow her on Instagram below!
