Selena Gomez Proves Even in the Public Eye, We Can All Be Adults About Our Breakups
It came to public attention earlier this week that Justin Bieber had spontaneously popped the question to his relatively new girlfriend, 21-year old model Hailey Baldwin. Like so many other beloved celebrities, Bieber’s relationships have always been in the public eye - including his long, tumultuous on-again off-again partnership with Selena Gomez.
The two broke up just a few months ago after rekindling their romance earlier last year, which makes the news of Hailey and Justin’s new engagement a little, um, confusing. It was a whirlwind romance after a similar on-off relationship that led up to his public proposal in the Bahamas:
"They are engaged and it happened Saturday night in front of a crowd in Baker's Bay," reports a source to E! News, confirming, "Justin made arrangements for the ring when they were in NYC and knew that he wanted to propose to her. It was a sudden decision, but Justin always knew Hailey and him had a special bond that was incomparable."
"The proposal was a very happy moment and Hailey was taken off guard," the source said. "Her face was in shock but you could tell they are both so in love."
But where is Selena in all of this?
...on a yacht apparently.
The singer proved that anyone - no matter how public and how scrutinized your personal life may be - can take the high road and not burn their exes.
She posed for pictures with her friend Theresa Mingus on the back of a small yacht as they roade around New York City while her ex celebrated his new engagement. She hasn’t officially commented on the new engagement, or the relationship itself for that matter, but sources claim she is “unfazed” and that she "truly did not care that they went public with their relationship."
As fun and entertaining it is to watch, gigantic trainwreck break-ups like that of Rob and Blac Chyna, it’s certainly refreshing to see a couple be at least unaffected by each other, and handle it gracefully. It’s an important reminder that as much as we may want to hunker down in front of our Twitter feeds and watch the chaos play out, these are real people working through real relationships. Whether it’s a celebrity like Selena, or just a regular old human like me, it’s an important reminder that we all go through it, and a little empathy goes a long way.
