Let’s Celebrate Black History Month Together!
February is here, which means it is the start of Black History Month. Since 1976, the United States has dedicated February to celebrate the achievements of African-Americans and the people who got them to where they are today, specifically the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. With so much division in the current state of our country, this month is a great opportunity to embrace the past and reflect on the sacrifices and struggles of African Americans that began with the brutal past of slavery and through a resilient fight, resulted in racial equality.
This month is a time to learn more about all of the important contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout our nation’s history , so they do not become forgotten or taken for granted. It also forces all Americans to have conversations about black identity and work towards eliminating stereotypes. Overall, Black History Month serves as a month where Americans can come together to reflect, understand and accept one another to celebrate the beautiful and rich history in blackness. This month gives us the hope that there is a brighter future ahead where everyone sees the world as just one race.
