Lena Dunham Says She Wishes She Had An Abortion
Lena Dunham is an American actress, writer, director, and producer. She is best know as the writer and creator of the HBO series Girls. This week she has been making headlines due to a comment she made about abortions.
Lena Dunham’s PR team is working hard to clean up the mess. Last week on Dunham’s podcast, ‘Women of the Hour’, she made some questionable comments on abortion. She was asked on her podcast to share her abortion story and her response was, “Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had.” The thing is she was never pregnant. Dunham may have had good intentions with her comments but they backfired and she received a lot of backlash online. A lot of people thought she was minimizing the serious issue and showed a lack of empathy. Since making the comment the actress has said that the whole comment was just a joke gone wrong. Dunham wrote a lengthy apology on her Instagram page. Here is part of it.
“My latest podcast episode was meant to tell a multifaceted story about reproductive choice in America, to explain the many reasons women do or don't choose to have children and what bodily autonomy really means. I'm so proud of the medley of voices in the episode. I truly hope a distasteful joke on my part won't diminish the amazing work of all the women who participated. My words were spoken from a sort of "delusional girl" persona I often inhabit, a girl who careens between wisdom and ignorance (that's what my TV show is too) and it didn't translate.”
Dunham is making it hard for pro-choice advocates to be taken seriously. If Dunham’s comments taught us anything it is that advocates need to be careful in the way they represent the pro-choice argument. Her comments were ignorant and are in no way helping the pro-choice movement. There is no need for her to try and normalize abortion by wishing she had one.
