Jessica Chastain Helps Octavia Spencer Get A Higher Salary

“She’s walking the walk and she’s actually talking the talk,” is what Octavia Spencer said about actress Jessica Chastain after she helped her increase her salary. The two actresses starred in the critically acclaimed film The Help. Since that movie came out in 2011, the two actresses have remained close and are going to star in a buddy comedy together. In an interview with Sundance TV, Spencer talked about how Chastain, who is also the producer for the film, helped her get a higher salary for their new buddy comedy.  It all started with a conversation.

“She was like, ‘It’s time women get paid the same as men! We were dropping f-bombs and getting it all out there. And then I said, ‘But here’s the thing, women of color, on that spectrum, we make far less than white women... .’ She was quiet. She had no idea that that’s what it was like for women of color.”

White woman earn 80% of what men are paid while a black woman make 63%.

Chastain vowed to help Spencer get paid what she deserved for the film. Telling Spencer that the two of them would make the same amount of money for that project. When the women went to negotiate Spencer's salary, they used a favored nations strategy, which is a contractual term that ensures all parties make equal deals. The negotiations went well because Spencer ended up making five times her original salary.

When women support other women only good things can happen.
