‘Jane the Virgin’ Stuns Fans With A Devastating Twist
If you have been keeping up with Jane the Virgin, you know that this week’s episode was heart-wrenching and has fans up in arms. If you haven’t been keeping up or you missed this week’s episode, we suggest you turn away from your screen right now because there are major SPOILERS on the way. We repeat MAJOR SPOILERS TO COME.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about the fact that after everything that’s happened in this show, and everything Jane and Michael have been through, our hearts are breaking. On Monday night’s shocking episode, our beloved Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) died of complications from the gunshot wound he received on his wedding night.
Following this shocking end to an otherwise romantic and happy episode for Jane and Michael, fans went crazy. The scene in which he died and those following it were absolutely life destroying. First and foremost, Gina Rodriguez gave the most incredibly accurate portrayal of a wife losing her husband. (Do we hear an Emmy nom already?) But this is where we get to the true heart of the show that Jennie Urman created for us.
After the episode Urman took to her Tumblr page and penned a heartfelt letter to the fans explaining Michael’s death. “It was also a decision made very early on,” she started, “when I thought about our story as a whole. And even in season one, I knew it would be a hard thing to actually do.” She continued to gush about her love for Brett Dier and how grateful she is to have gotten the chance to work with him.
However, at the heart of Jane the Virgin, that is who the show is about: Jane and the other Villanueva women, Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) and Alba (Ivonne Coll). From the very beginning this show we have seen Jane work through her hopeless-romantic telenovela of a life. At every turn and every hardship, she perseveres with optimism. No matter what she, with the help of her family, pulls through.
“You’ll recall, back in the pilot, Jane was on a path.” Urman wrote in her letter. “Things were mapped out. And then she was accidentally artificially inseminated and everything changed. Well now, everything is changing again. How does our romance-loving hero move on, how does she get back the light and the hope…?”
This is exactly why, as life ruining as it may seem, killing off Michael Cordero was the right choice for the show. Jane is a strong and a bit meddlesome woman who is a source of inspiration for us all. She has gotten through all of the insanity of her life and still has a smile on her face. Now we get to see her take on this incredibly challenging time and see that she, once again, will pull through and be the hero we have come to love.
