How Social Media Made A 10-Year-Old Confident After Being Bullied Because Of Dark Complexion
The Pollard family from Los Angeles, recently experienced bullying due to the youngest daughter, Kheris, skin tone.
Kheris often faces a tough time in her elementary school. Kids would often tease her about her complexion. Her mother, Erika, decided to transfer her to a different school because the bullying began to affect Kheris’ self esteem.
Kheris stated to Buzzfeed News that during an exercise in class her teacher asked students to draw themselves, then handed her a black crayon. She replied, “I’m not that dark . . . I’m brown.”
Her mother transferred her to a more diverse school; however, the bullying continued as students commented negatively on her skin tone--this time they were coming from other black students.
Feeling helpless, Erika tweeted a photo of Kheris after a Wiz-inspired fashion show and the photo went viral. Kheris started to feel confident and better about her complexion after reading what people had to say.
“I was overwhelmed,” Kheris said. “There were so many comments that they loved my skin and my hair.”
