Halima Aden Wears Her Hijab Down The Runway
Diversity is the main thing being served on the runway this year and Halima Aden is living proof of that. Halima Aden is a name that you are probably familiar with since she is best known for wearing her hijab during the Miss Minnesota contestant. Now, this Somali-American, who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp, is working her way up to being America's next top model. She is signed with IMG Models and made her runway debut in Kanye West's Yeezy Season 5 show. She was also featured in the CR Fashion Book where she was asked about being called a hero, she said,
"I wish I could tell them, 'Hey, I'm not a perfect Muslim.' A lot of people had a misconception that I would be the perfect poster child for Islam. So I got a lot of Instagram comments like, 'Oh, you don't have your neck covered, you're not a Muslim!' My thing is, stop judging women, especially if you're a man because you don't know the responsibility that comes with wearing a hijab."
Aden's presence in the fashion industry is more important now than ever. With all the negative stigmas being created around people who wear hijabs and who are of Muslim faith, Aden is a breath of fresh air. She is breaking down the stigma that women who wear hijabs are somehow being oppressed by their culture.
While speaking with Vogue magazine Aden left us with a message that everyone needs to hear.
“My goal is to send a message to Muslim women and young women everywhere that it’s okay to break stereotypes and be yourself,” she says. “Always stay true to who you are—barriers can and will be broken!”
