First LGBT Couple On The Cover Of ESPN The Magazine
ESPN the magazine decided to do something different for their new body issue. The Magazine celebrated its 10th anniversary of the body issue with 10 different cover images. WNBA star Sue Bird and professional soccer player Megan Rapinoe is featured on one of the covers and will become the first LGBTQ couple to pose together in the magazine's history.
This year ESPN aims to celebrate diversity and three other women are also featured on the covers: soccer player Crystal Dunn, softball player Lauren Chamberlain, and basketball star Breanna Stewart. All the people featured on the body issue are in the nude showcasing their athletic bodies. Creators of the magazine say the body issue challenges traditional notions of bodily perfection, which is normally presented in beauty magazines. This issue gives readers the opportunity to celebrate athletic bodies.
It is especially important to see female athletic bodies because those bodies are normally seen as unattractive and masculine. All body types should be celebrated and recognized for its unique beauty.
“It's pretty amazing to think about [being on the cover of the Body Issue], especially in the times we're in. Just think of how far we've come, but also the current climate. Not only are we female athletes, but we're dating as well. It's kind of bad-ass.” - Megan Rapinoe
