Feminist Strike?! Women In Spain Refuse To Work On International Women's Day
In Madrid, Spain thousands of women are refusing to work! Unions calculated 5.3 million women who joined the 24-hour strike. Thousands of women gathered in the street protests across Spain, shouting "if we stop, the world stops"
Events marking this day are being held in dozens of other nations. In Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia and a number of other cities are leading events in 200 Spanish locations.
The strike, which is being supported by some of Spain’s best-known female politicians – including Madrid’s mayor, Manuela Carmena, and the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau – has drawn huge crowds on to streets and squares across the country to call for change and equality. Police were called to stop protesters blocking main roads in Barcelona but some women pickets still brought areas to a standstill. Feminist groups only want women to strike to show how important their absence is but Spanish law does not allow for single-gender strikes and men were welcome to support it.
