Emma Watson Makes History at The MTV Movie & TV Awards
Last Night’s MTV Movie & TV Awards had it’s fair share of surprises and laughs throughout the night. The popular awards show also made a bit of history last night with actress Emma Watson being the recipient of the first EVER Genderless Acting Award.
The actress took to the stage to accept the “Best Actor” Award for her role as Belle in the live action film Beauty & the Beast. The actress who is a known feminist and continually promotes awareness for gender equality was nonetheless humbled and honored to be apart of an award like this. She took her time onstage to recognize and applaud MTV for demonstrating progress toward a more open and accepting future.
"I feel I have to say something about the award itself. The first acting award in history that doesn't separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience. MTV's move to create a gender less award for acting will mean something different to everyone. But to me, it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes. And that doesn't need to be separated into two different categories."
The actress shared a laugh about her singing experience in the Disney film and expressed how honored she was to portray a character that possesses so many amazing qualities. A character that never let the critics around her interfere with her dreams and curiosity about the world. A big shout out to MTV for making such a progressive move last night, and to hopefully inspiring others to be just as open minded in the foreseeable future.
