Couple Creates Natural Hair Dolls to Empower Young Girls to Love Their Own Beauty
“My daughter Sophia was not happy with her kinks and curls because of the doll I was putting in her hands every day,” co-creator of the Naturally Perfect line of dolls, Angelica Sweeting said. “She even started expressing a strong dislike for her facial features and skin tone,” she went on to say.
Following this shocking discovery about her own beautiful children, Angelica Sweeting, alongside her husband Jason Sweeting, began work on conceptualizing and creating a line of natural hair dolls for young black girls who were beginning to realize that the dolls they are given to play with don’t look like them. These dolls would be called Naturally Perfect.
“Our girls need to see a reflection of their own unique beauty,” the couple says. “It’s time for young girls to have a new standard.”
Jason and Angelica then worked closely with their two daughters Sophia and Sydney to imagine their ideal doll. Once they had figured out what they wanted, they took to Kickstarter and raised $25,000 in just two days! Once they had the funds to start, Angelica and Jason got started on creating their new dolls.
It is no secret that the toys made for girls today influence the way they view themselves and how they should look and act in their lives. For the most part, little girls are given dolls to play with and those dolls, at least the most popular, are all white girls with pin straight, silky hair and cute little button noses. There is no question that these dolls are adorable, but are they the only perception we want our children to have of what little girls should aspire to look like? Couple Jason and Angelica Sweeting most definitely do not think so and we can’t help but agree.
“I had been influenced by society’s standard of beauty for as long as I can remember,” the Sweetings shared on their website. “I want this to happen for all the young girls who never felt pretty enough because of their kinks, curls, wider noses, and fuller lips.”
The first doll they created was called the Angelica doll, made to look like Sophia and Sydney. There are now four different dolls of varying skin tones, hairstyles, and unique backgrounds. Each doll has natural hair that can be washed and styled so girls can learn to love styling hair that is exactly like their own.
The four dolls – Angelica, Brielle, Camryn, and Kennedy – come with haircare instructions and the @naturallyperfectdolls Instagram account features haircare and styling tutorials on to try out on the dolls.
Even with the Kickstarter campaign, the dolls still run a bit of a high price at $83.00 each because of the high production costs. In an effort to try to make the dolls more affordable, the couple took their idea on Shark Tank to try to get more money invested in their dolls.
To their luck, Daymond John, an investor on the reality TV show has mixed race daughters and felt a deep connection to the mission Jason and Angelica Sweeting were on. He invested $200,000 into the Naturally Perfect dolls in exchange for 30% of the company. The Sweetings also decided that they will be giving 10% of their shares to a girls’ empowerment charity.
We could not be more proud to share what this couple has accomplished. Giving young girls the chance to have their faces and their own beauty represented in the toys they play with is a priceless gift the Sweetings have given to millions of girls. They need the chance to feel beautiful and good enough in their own skin and realize that blonde haired, blue eyed little girls are not the only beautiful ones. Every girl should feel important, beautiful, and empowered and there is no better way to start instilling that in them than with the toys they play with as children. Well done, Sweeting family. We cannot wait to see what Naturally Perfect has in store for us next!
