Casting Director Airs Out Fashion Industry Dirty Secrets
James Scully, is a name the fashion industry will never forget for so many reasons. He is a very famous casting director who works directly in model casting and development for Oscar de la Renta, Tom Ford, and many others. Earlier this month he posted a message on his Instagram page airing out some of the fashion industries dirty laundry. After being a part of Paris Fashion week this year, he accused French-based fashion houses of treating models inhumanely and of being racist. Not only did he talk about particular fashion house, but he dropped names and talked about different people in the industry.
One accusation that he made was on Balenciaga casting directors Maida Gregori Boina and Rami Fernandes, who decided to go out to lunch and leave 150 models in a stairwell with no lights for three hours. A few models confirmed the story and Balenciaga fired the casting agents. Black models wore shirts that said Black Models Matter to protest the lack of diversity on the runway from certain fashion houses like Lanvin. According to Scully, they asked model agents not to send models of color for their casting. Lanvin denied the claims.
Scully has gained a lot of attention with his post and with the help of major fashion houses like LVMH and Kering (who have pledged to help) hopes to improve the way models are treated and represented.
