Blake Lively Inspires Us With Her Girl Power Acceptance Speech
In the latest of a string of inspirational speeches, Blake Lively delivered one at the People’s Choice Awards on January 18th that hit really hit home for us. With the rights of women in question in the wake of the election, the People’s Choice winner for “Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress” used her win to empower all of the women and girls watching with her acceptance speech.
“My mom, she always taught me as a kid that you can’t ever let anyone limit you,” Lively started. “Don’t ever let anyone tell you there’s something you can’t do.”
The Shallows actress explained that at the time, her biggest goal in life was to meet the Spice Girls. Although she still hasn’t met them, Blake looked up to them as her role models.
“They’re all so distinctly different and they were women and they owned who they were and that was my first introduction to girl power,” she said of the girl group.
With her two young daughters, James and newborn, Ilsa, Blake knows how important it is to set a positive example and encourage girls to be empowered and chase their dreams. She thanked the audience and the people who voted for her win.
“Thank you for sending a message to Hollywood that people want to hear stories about women…tell your stories, now more than ever,” she urged the women and girls watching. “You need to be heard, you are valuable, and no one can limit you.”
As a Hollywood actress, and one young girls have looked up to since her days in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, it is amazing that she, and so many other actresses and actors are using the time they are given in the spotlight and their influence to empower their fans.
