Are You Actively Learning From Your Lessons?
I consider myself a student of life. Does that sound yuppie and a bit self help-y? If it does, I’m sorry it comes across that way to you but I am not sorry for feeling it. In my post grad life, I found that actively learning was something I felt was missing in my life. So recently I incorporated some practices that encourage me to accumulate more knowledge on subjects I didn’t know enough about before.
Read the News
I know we all avoid the news and twitter is full of it. You feel like it’s being shoved down your throat. But when’s the last time you read an in depth article about an issue? One that was over 500 words? Not just a tweet – even if we have 280 characters now! Read a lengthily piece of journalism once day about something that is happening in the world. You may not understand all of it at first glance but you’ll have a far better understanding after 1,000+ words or so.
Read a Book
Does this sound patronizing? I don’t mean it like that! I am a proud millennial who is in awe of all the good our generation is doing. But my advice to you is: pick up a book about a subject you’re unfamiliar with. I recently discovered I have an interest in psychology so why not learn a little bit more about it? Figure out a topic you’re curious about!
Look Up Words You Don’t Know
This is a new thing for me and I’m really excited about it. Screw the context clues – I have the internet at my finger tips. When I come across a word I don’t know, I look up the definition and write it down in my journal. Writing helps me solidify knowledge. Or if you don’t carry a journal, make a little note in your phone. It’s crazy how many new words you’ll collect in a week.
We all have Netflix or at least the person we’re kind of sleeping with does. So take advantage of the documentary category. I guarantee you will find so many topics that fascinate you. It doesn’t have to be relevant to your life, just something that will hold your interest. And documentary watching is addicting, so I’m excited for your journey through Netflix.
Information is all around you - take advantage of it!
