And the Oscar Goes to…

It’s that time of year again! where we all anxiously await to see what movies made the biggest cut of all. The 2017 Oscar Nominations list was released a few days ago with some widely known movies (La La Land, Arrival) and of course a couple of indie flicks (Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight) that always slither their way into awards consideration. After the controversy last year of the Oscars lacking diversity and the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite gaining momentum throughout social media, this year’s nominations seem to show that those thoughts were not spoken in vain.

La La Land leads the awards show with 14 nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor for Ryan Gosling and Best Actress for Emma Stone. Moonlight opens up the floor for brilliant performances from first time nominees Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris who is a familiar face, as you may have seen her as the widely known role of Eve Moneypenny in the last two James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. This year’s show seems to have opened the floor for redemption as well for some like Mel Gibson, whose recent directorial piece Hacksaw Ridge has seen rave reviews all across the spectrum and has gathered six nominations including one for Gibson himself as Best Director. This year’s celebrations will be hosted by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel on February 26, 2017 at the Dolby Theatre. It’ll surely be a nail biter like always to see who will take home the most sought after golden man in the business.
