Meryl Streep Powerful Speech At The Golden Globes
On Sunday, January 7th, 2016 the Hollywood Foreign Press Association presented one of the most respected and well-decorated actresses of our time with the lifetime achievement award of excellence. The great Meryl Streep accepted her award with honor and with a message to the American people that brought the audience to their knees and then to their feet in applause.
Streep took her lifetime achievement award and turned it into something truly powerful and transformative. She took her allotted time and then some to deliver a speech that will not soon be forgotten by all those who had the honor of hearing it.
Meryl Streep took a moment to call our collective attention to the current political situation the United States finds itself in following the election of Donald Trump to the Oval Office. She began her speech by shedding some light on the fact that in a room full of Hollywood’s finest and most worshipped celebrities, a great number of them are facing the very real fear of losing their civil rights and quite possibly citizenship altogether.
“Hollywood is crawling with foreigners,” she said. “and if you kick ‘em all out, you’ll have nothing else to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”
Streep then took a moment to address the fact that she has seen hundred of performances that truly took her breath away but that there was one performance which blows all the rest out of the water and left her truly in shock.
“It was the moment,” she says, “when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter.” She went on to say that “this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public eye…gives permission for others to do the same.”
The great “Dame Streep” as Viola Davis so affectionately refers to her, incited a call to action to all those in the room and all those glued to their televisions a she spoke to respect one another and to continue to fight back against a President who will run our country based on hatred, disrespect, and violence.
Following the speech Donald Trump took to twitter in response, calling Meryl Streep “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood” and a “Hillary flunky who lost big”. Excuse us while we contain our laughter and *insert eye roll emoji here*.
Trump, while he takes ample time to attempt to clap back at the media for sharing the truth behind his lies, has yet to address the hundreds of hate crimes that have occurred since his presidency win. Meryl Streep ended brought her final thoughts in reminding us to support the press at a time when our country needs them more than ever before.
“We’re gonna need them going forward,” she says, “and they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.”
